Iròn (pronounced "Eron") is a fascinating medieval village located near Ragoli in the Dolomites of Trentino. Known as the "phantom village," Iron was abandoned after being decimated by the plague in 1630, a tragic event that left a significant mark on its history. The village has remained remarkably well-preserved and serves as a poignant reminder of the past.
The small church in Iron, dedicated to San Giacomo, features traces of Gothic frescoes and is perched on a panoramic high-altitude location, adding to the village's charm. This church was assigned to the Stefani family of Tione in 1657, whose crest, depicting a heron, gave the village its name.
Today, Iron is brought back to life during the summer months when it hosts numerous events that celebrate local traditions and culture. Visitors can explore the village's medieval Alpine layout, complete with an ancient well that once served the community.
